Minister stands by statement on ex-Naxals

Dubai: The Ministry of Non-Resident Indians in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh yesterday stood by its claim that former Naxalites are moving to the Gulf for employment. The statement came shortly after Yash Sinha, the Indian consul general, denied the Gulf News report in which Mohammad Ali Shabber, the Non-Resident Affairs Minister from the state, was quoted as saying former Naxals have found jobs as construction workers in the UAE.

"The consulate has no information on this and there appears to be no truth in this," said Sinha.

P. Rasheed, spokesperson from the minister's office, yesterday confirmed the Gulf News report and said former Naxals have gone to the Gulf for work and not to create any disturbances. "We know the ground realities in the state," Rasheed added.
