Catholics and Baptists feud at Pechi village, churches razed

IMPHAL, May 15: At least four churches belonging to Catholics located at Pechi Maring village under Yairipok police station were razed to ground today by Baptist of the same village, a report received here said today.

In the wake of the arson, the situation had become tense in the village and the two groups are blaming one another for the incident.

According to reports received here, Baptists of Pechi marched towards the catholic churches early this morning at around 4 am. with weapons and began the assaults.

First the mob dismantled the churches and later set them on fire. None of the four churches could be saved from being razed, the report added.

Pechi Maring, mention may be made, is inhabited by the Marings and all of them are Christains though of two different denomination, Catholic and Baptist.

Among them the Baptists are in majority and more influential in Pechi Maring as well as in the surrounding villages.

According to reports, the establishment of Catholic churches was not taken kindly by the Baptist group.

Today`s incident is the outcome of a long brewing tension among the two groups of villagers, the report added.

However, the immediate provocation for the burning down of the churches could not be immediately confirmed.
