Surjewala flaks INLD for its anti-reservation stance

Haryana Parliamentary Affairs and Transport Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala today demanded an apology from Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Secretary General Ajay Chautala for opposing reservation for Dalits, Backward Classes and similar sections of the society.

Addressing a press conference here this evening, Surjewala said that it was regrettable the INDL General Secretary spoke against the very concept of reservation, which is enshrined in the Constitution. "By giving such a statement on behalf of the INLD, Ajay is trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of the state," he added.

Surjewala said the statement of Ajay reflects the anti-Dalit and anti-poor mentality of the INLD as also of the Chautala family. "Traditionally the Dalits and the poor have never supported the INLD though in February 2005 assembly elections, six of the eight winners of the INLD belonged to the reserved categories," he added.

The minister demanded the resignations of Ajay and the six legislators of the latter's party, who won from the reserved constituencies.

He also alleged that atrocities against Dalits, backward classes and the poor had increased when the Om Parkash Chautala led INLD government was in power. "Today, they are again giving provocative statements to divide the people of the state on caste lines," he added.

When asked about the on-going protests by medicos against the reservation policy, Surjewala said though their demand for quality education is justified, it cannot be ignored that the reserved classes need the facility in educational institutions too if they are to fully benefit from the current job reservations.
