Three senior Cabinet Ministers to work out formula on quota

The government has set up an informal group of three senior Cabinet Ministers to work out a compromise formula on the volatile reservation issue taking into account the interests of all section.

The group comprises Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, HRD Minister Arjun Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, informed sources said today.

"It is neither a committee or a panel… Three Ministers will be meeting in order to work out a mechanism, a formula" to resolve the issue, the sources said, adding no time-frame has been fixed for finalising the formula.

First reports had said that Law Minister H R Bhardwaj is also a member of the group but unconfirmed reports late in the night said Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has been included in his place. There was, however, no official confirmation of this.

The committee was set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a day when Government told the Lok Sabha that there was no dilution of its commitment to provide OBC quota in elite educational institutions.

The reported proposal of the Prime Minister initiating discussion with political parties was also given up for the time being because of the current atmosphere, sources said.
