Daughter-in-law of Gujarat’s ‘godmother’ shot dead

Ahmedabad – Unidentified gunmen Saturday shot dead the daughter-in-law of Santokben Jadeja, a former legislator who inspired the Hindi film ‘Godmother’ after her role in decades-old organised violence, in Saurashtra city of Rajkot.
Rajkot Police Commissioner K. Nityanandan said Rekha was host dead by unidentified attackers Saturday morning. A police complaint was registered, and the search for the killers was on, he said.
The murder could be related to the Jadeja family’s ties with underworld criminals, police sources said.
Jadeja’s husband Sarman Munja had been killed in a gang war in Saurashtra’s port town of Porbandar in the 1980’s. The widow had then reportedly taken over her husband’s role as a gang leader, inspiring the legend of ‘godmother’.
She was elected to the Gujarat assembly in the 1990s from Kutiyana in Saurashtra as an independent.
