Basti (UP), May 21: A district court has sentenced a BJP leader to five years of rigorous imprisonment for submitting fake caste certificate while filing his nomination papers in the 1996 assembly elections from an assembly constituency in the district.
Chief Judicial Magistrate M P Singh Yadav sentenced Ram Prasad Gaur under various sections of the IPC and the Representation of Peoples' Act yesterday.
Gaur had been charged with submitting fake SC certificate with his nomination papers, which was objected to by other candidates. The BJP had later withdrawn the party symbol allotted to Gaur.
An FIR had been registered and the chargesheet was filed by the police later.
