Bhopal, May. 28 (PTI): Reservation in institutes of higher education or government jobs should be abolished, but benefits of quota system should be offered till higher secondary school, the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha said today.
"The quota system should be done away with in institutes of higher education and government jobs. We have been talking about it within the party and making suggestions to governments," Morcha President Ramnath Kovind told reporters here.
"But, before doing so, the infrastructure should be developed to ensure that they (SC, ST and OBC students) get benefits of reservation during primary and secondary education…, till 10+2," he said adding "they should be then left in the open to compete with others on basis of merits," Kovind said.
Claiming that the morcha's stand was clear about importance of reservation in bringing in social equality, he accused the media of "not highlighting" protests by pro-quota activists and alleged that instead of a debate on how to implement reservation, the focus has shifted to why reservation should be offered.
On demands for excluding `creamy layer' of reserved classes from quota system, Kovind said "it can't be implemented as it will defeat the purpose for which reservation was proposed — mainly to end untouchability. Even after gaining important posts, members of reserved categories have to face hardships."
Kovind had earlier led a delegation to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan with several demands including monitoring system of implementation of welfare schemes for SC members and formation of state SC Commission and state SC Finance Development Corporation.
