The VOG-17 is 30 mm grenade ammunition, and has a basic high explosive fragmentation warhead with lethal damage and kill zone radius of about 7-9 meter.
 
The Shell that exploded in an ex-serviceman’s house in Nagaiahana Palya, Banaswadi that killed two children on May 12, was a “VOG-17 grenade” that can be launched only by an Automatic grenade Launcher said Brigadier Clement Samuel, Commandant Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area.

Speaking to Deccan Herald Brigadier Samuel said that Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area has given a report to the police about the grenade which exploded killing Prashanth (13) and Susenraj (4) while they were playing in the house of a retired gunman G Inbanathan of the 9th Engineering Regiment.

It was an unexploded VOG-17 grenade, he said. The Sub Area has safely destroyed another unexploded grenade which was recovered from the scene of the incident by the police, he said. The military police has also initiated an inquiry to trace the origin of the grenade from the batch number found on it, Brigadier Clement said.

The VOG-17 grenades are of Russian origin and used by army and paramilitary of India. Even some militia in Jammu and Kashmir use these grenades, he said. Brigadier Samuel said that there was a possibility that one of the boys’ father might have got the grenade as a souvenir.

The VOG-17 grenades are generally launched by the AGS-17 (Avtomatischeskyi Granatmyot Stankovyi – Automatic Grenade launcher, Mounted) and similar lau-nchers are belt-fed, blowback operated grenades used in machine guns.
