BANGALORE: Leaders from various walks of life on Wednesday urged the centre to continue the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions till social equality was achieved.
Talking to newspersons here, B R Patil, MLA, said it was meaningless to talk of merit issue as long as there was no equal opportunity in education.
Holding the Sangh Parivar and BJP responsible for the anti-reservation agitation rocking the country, he alleged that the BJP was blowing the issue out of proportions by spreading false propaganda and demanded that the party spell out its stand on the issue clearly.
The legislator criticised the media, particularly the Eletronic media, for “glorifying” the stirs.
Writer K Marulashiddappa said meritorious students who posed a threat to the nation through brain drain should be considered as traitors and action initiated against them.
Writer Chandrashekhar Patil, actor Lohitashawar and cardiologist Prabhudeva favoured continuation of reservation system till the country became free from social evils.
The leaders advocated setting up of an egalitarian society based on the philosophy of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara.
