High Court directs compensation to 26 victims

Kochi: The Kerala High Court today directed the state government to pay compensation of rs one lakh each to another 26 victims of the Vypeen Liqour tragedy which had claimed 71 lives in September 1982.

The tragedy had occurred on the eve of Onam festival celebrations after the victims drank arrack from licensed arrack shops at Vypeen. While 71 persons died, 19 became blind.

In 2001, the High Court had directed the government to pay compensation of rs one lakh each to 56 victims. Justice C N Ramachandran Nair directed the government to realise the amounts from the assets of the arrack contractors and excise officials.

Though government resisted the claim of the victims, saying they had sought compensation after a long delay, the court declined to entertain the objection raised by the government.
