CONVICTED Asutralian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby's sister Mercedes has had her teeth filed down by hand in a Hindu ceremony.
The ceremony took place in Bali where she lives with husband Wayan Widiartha and their children.
The 2000-year-old custom is to shorten and dull the teeth, particularly the canines, which are seen as a symbol of lust, greed, insobriety, confusion and jealousy.
Filing these canine teeth is seen to eliminate evil and make the person physically and spiritually beautiful.
The ceremony marks the rite of passage into adulthood for most devotees — but an exception was made for Ms Corby.
The tooth-filing took place on a Sunday morning at her husband's family compound.
Ms Corby admitted to nervousness and having trouble sleeping the night before the ceremony.
Senior politicians and army and police officers made appearances and more than 500 people were in the compound during the day.
Ms Corby's father, Michael Corby, also witnessed the event.
Mercedes said she didn't feel much pain: "There was a bit of tingling, but that's all."
