RSS leader from Kannur arrested for murder

The Police on Wednesday arrested an RSS leader from Kannur in connection with the murder of CPI(M) activist, Anikkallu Valappil Yacob (26)  in Meethale Punnad, Kannur district.

Kavyesh (27), the Taluk Karyavahak, (General Secretary) was arrested by the Kannur police in connection with the murder. According to the police, 12 Sangh Parivar criminals should have participated in the murder.  RSS Kannur District Intellectual Head, Mr. Vazhakkodu Shankaran, his younger brother Vazhakkodu Manojan, Vijesh and Prakash are also included in the case.

Kannur SP Mathew Paul said that more arrests would be made soon in connection with Yacob's murder.

KANNUR: Tension prevails at Iritty and nearby areas following the murder of a Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker at Meethale Punnad under the Iritty police station limits on Tuesday night.

K.V. Yakub (24) had been hacked to death by a group of suspected Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers at Kottathekunnu, near Meethale Punnad, at around 10 p.m. A large posse of police personnel was deployed in the area in view of the tense situation there. Inspector-General of Police V. Shantharam and Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp were camping the area.

The murder was believed to be a sequel to clashes between CPI(M) and RSS workers at Kottathekunnu on June 11. Yakub was one of the accused in a case relating to the clashes, the police said.

Meanwhile, the Iritty police conducted extensive raids in the area.

The police said that a few RSS activists, including district-level RSS leader Valsan Thillankery, were taken into preventive custody. They said that five RSS workers had been identified as assailants who carried out the attack.

In a retaliatory incident, Pragathi Vidya Nikethan parallel college, near Iritty, being run by local RSS activists, was vandalised by irate CPI(M) workers in the morning. Furniture in the college was destroyed.

The body of the deceased was buried at the cemetery of the Juma Masjid at Punnad in the evening. Earlier, CPI(M) leaders M. V. Govindan and M. V. Jayarajan received the body after post-mortem examination at the Government General Hospital at Thalassery.

The day-long hartal called by the CPI(M) in the Keezhur-Chavassery panchayat to protest against the murder was total.
