Friday, June 16, 2006 (Jammu):
A woman Army officer allegedly shot herself to death at the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur district on Thursday night. The officer, identified as Lt Sushmita Chakarvorty, was depressed with her job and wanted to quit but her mother did not allow her to do so, leading to her to take the extreme step. Chakravorty had earlier gone on leave for two months to her native place in Bhopal, where her mother persuaded her to continue with the job and even accompanied her to the headquarters. Her father BB Chakraborty said that she was not at all happy with her job.
"She was posted at Udhampur but did not know what kind of job awaited her. She told them, she was a gold medallist in MSc Chemistry but was being made to do job not corresponding to degree. She had mentioned this to her seniors. They said she will get used to and could also get posted out," he said.
Sushmita Chakarvorty was working in transport section while she was willing to teach in an Army institute or school. Chakraborty was a gold medallist in MSc chemistry. Official sources said she took the rifle of a guard posted at army guesthouse, went inside and shot herself.
Chakraborty was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her dead. The body was handed over to her mother for the last rites. The Army has instituted a court of inquiry into the incident. This is the first ever incident of a lady officer committing suicide in the armed forces. The Army said Chakraborty had very low self-esteem and had undergone counselling. She had requested for leave and had also previously attempted suicide. (With PTI inputs)
