ISLAMABAD: Ishwar Lal, a Hindu member of Pakistan's Sindh provincial assembly, was thrashed by colleagues after he sent a ‘love note’ to a woman member, media reports from Karachi said on Thursday.
Shazia Mari, who belongs to the Pakistan People's Party, received the note on Wednesday through an orderly when assembly proceedings were on.
According to the Dawn newspaper, as Mari read the note with visible distaste, she received another chit from Poonjomal Bheel, a Hindu member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. Lal also belongs to MQM.
Incensed, she handed over both papers to Opposition leader Nisar Khuhro, who passed them on to other Opposition members.
The Opposition members moved to the treasury benches to which Lal belongs, caught him by the scruff of his neck and beat him up. He was dragged out of the assembly hall.
His apologies did not cut ice, the Daily Times said. The speaker suspended Lal as well as the members who attacked him.
Later, Mari told Geo Television that Lal was seeking to befriend her and had been sending her mobile phone messages for a year.
Lal said that he had sent the note to inquire after Mari's health as he had been informed that she had been unwell lately.
