NEW DELHI: A sub-inspector of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police has been arrested on charges of criminally assaulting a 23-year-old woman at Rohini in the Capital in the early hours of Thursday. He has been dismissed from service.
The Police Control Room received a distress call around 3-30 a.m. on Thursday alleging that a policeman, claiming to be with the Crime Branch, had criminally assaulted a woman at her Rohini residence. A team of the local police rushed to the spot and arrested the accused, who was allegedly drunk.
The accused was identified as Sub-Inspector K. B. Jha, posted at the Prashant Vihar office of the Crime Branch.
The victim alleged that late on Wednesday night he came to her residence and demanded Rs. 50,000 for not taking action against her and the person she was staying with, identified as Raj Kumar. The sub-inspector purportedly sent out Raj Kumar to arrange the amount and in his absence allegedly assaulted the woman.
The woman, a native of Kolkata, earlier used to work in a Mumbai dance bar and was brought to the Capital about three months ago by Raj Kumar, whose family lives here at Jehangirpuri.
Acting on the woman's complaint, the police registered a rape case against Sub-Inspector Jha. Subsequently, proceedings for his dismissal from service were initiated by senior police officers.
At least four other cases of rape have been reported in the Capital since Tuesday.
A four-year-old girl was found unconscious near the railway track at Krishna Nagar in East Delhi on Thursday morning. Medical examination confirmed that she had been criminally assaulted. The girl has been admitted to Swami Dayanand Hospital.
According to the police, the girl's father had lodged a missing report around 9 p.m. on Wednesday. While the police have registered a case of rape, it is learnt that the accused has been identified and a hunt has been launched for him.
In another case of rape, a minor girl was criminally assaulted by an acquaintance at G.B. Pant Hospital in Central Delhi on Tuesday. The accused, Adil, took her to the hospital toilet and raped her. The police have arrested Adil.
In the other two cases reported from different parts of the Capital, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and criminally assaulted by a neighbour at Gokalpuri on Wednesday. The accused was arrested later. In the other case, a 32-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her 52-year-old father-in-law at Khajoori Khas on Tuesday.
