Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 26 (UNI) The Kerala government is taking steps to bring new legislation for complete prohibition of child labour, Labour Minister P K Gurudasan told the Assembly today.
Currently the Labour Department was implementing the provisions of the 1986 Child Labour (Prohibition and Control) Act and the 1993 Kerala Child Labour (Prohibition and Control) Acts to check child labour in the state, he said, replying to questions by M Ummer of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and others.
According to the Act, no child below 14 years should engage in dangerous jobs, Mr Gurudasan added.
He said a 'District Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Society' with the District Collector as Chairman and District Labour Officer as Convenor was functioning in all districts to rehabilitate children rescued from their working places.
The Society was also conducting awareness programmes to discourage child labour and to make children's future bright, he added.
