Chandigarh, June 21: The Central Bureau of Investigation’s Anti-Corruption Branch, Chandigarh, nabbed Ravikant Panwar, Intelligence Officer, Narcotics Control Bureau, on the charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a Kullu resident. Panwar is posted at the Regional Office, NCB, Sector 2.
The complainant, Devinder Kumar, in his complaint, said his brother was arrested by the NCB on February 9 last year along with two foreigners. His brother’s case is pending trial in a local court here.
Panwar allegedly approached the complainant saying that he could help his brother during the trial by tampering with the evidence of witnesses in his favour. But the complainant said that he refused to pay the bribe.
Panwar approached the complainant yesterday again and demanded Rs 40,000. He allegedly threatened that in case of non-payment of bribe, he would forfeit his land as well as the land of his brother and harass their relatives. The complainant then approached CBI and lodged a complaint in the office of the SP (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch.
After preliminary verification, in which contents of complaint were found prima facie correct, a case was registered and Ravikant was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 40,000 in the presence of independent witnesses at Gagan Sweets, Sector 15, where the CBI officials were already sitting in plainclothes.
Panwar was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act and raids were conducted at his residence too.
