CBI registers FIRs in coffin scam case

Friday, July 7, 2006 (New Delhi):

The CBI has registered FIRs against serving and retired army officers in the coffin scam case.

The case was registered against Major General (retired) Arun Roye, the then military attaché in the Indian Embassy in the US, Director MGO Colonel S K Malik and Joint Director MGO Colonel Fateh Bahadur Singh said CBI sources.

Coffin suppliers Buitron and Baiza have also come under the CBI scanner.

India imported coffins from the US for Kargil martyrs but they did not come in time and when they did come they did not meet specifications.

Subsequent enquiries proved that India had paid double the US prices for these coffins. While the US defence supplies centre at Philadelphia bought these for $ 1200 a piece, Indian Army paid $ 2500 dollars for each coffin.

CBI booked these officials under Section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and Section 420 (cheating) under the IPC and a section under the Prevention of Corruption Act. (With PTI inputs)
