Kerala Police Act to be amended

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Thiruvananthapuram – State home minister Koderi Balakrishnan, Tuesday informed that the changes are being made to the Kerala Police Act in the wake of three custodial deaths in various police stations in the state.

‘These are being made to see that the station house officer in each police station would be held responsible for deaths in custody,’ said the minister to reporters here.

He also added the Act would be amended in such a manner that the district judge would inquire into custodial deaths and appropriate action be taken against the station house officer.

‘We have already begun discussions with legal experts to see that the Act is amended,’ said the minister.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in its 60 days in office has seen three custodial deaths taking place and has caused a lot of uneasiness to the government.

The LDF had highlighted during the assembly polls that while the Congress led United Democratic Front ruled the state from 2001-06, close to 200 custodial deaths had taken place.
