VIJAYAWADA: Supernatural belief is the root of witchcraft practice and sorcery. With this wrong belief people used to harm others in the name of sorcerers, said Dr Samaram of Atheist Centre.
Speaking on ‘Critical thinking and free inquiry in education’ at Atheist Centre on Tuesday, as part of International Humanist Youth Conference (IHYC), he said the scourge of sorcery and witchcraft could be controlled here through education and awareness. He expressed concern that witchcraft is still in practice in Telangana region.
While making a presentation on Dalit issue in India, International Humanist and Ethical Union Director Babu Gogineni said it was interconnected with the issue of human rights and dignity and respect to each individual. The issue of untouchability requires urgent attention with comprehensive outlook. He said there must be a multi-pronged system to tackle the issue of loss of human dignity of the Dalits. He said caste system is a bane for progress.
The week-long IHYC was organised at Atheist Centre on the theme ‘Critical thinking and free inquiry in education’. Over 60 youth from USA, Norway, Australia, Finland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, South Korea and Nepal participated.
