Ahmedabad, November 2: A 24-year-old newly married woman committed suicide by hanging herself, reportedly because of physical and mental torture by her in-laws. The deceased, Nimisha Patel, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Ghatlodia, late on Wednesday.

Nimisha, the police said, was an MBA graduate and was all set to leave for the US within a month. She married one Hitesh Patel about 11 months ago. Hitesh, who studied in London, had returned to India a week ago, after completing a degree course in hotel management.

Amid mystery which shrouds Nimisha’s death, her father, a Navsari-based businessman, Jainti Patel filed a complaint with the Ghatlodia police on Thursday morning, alleging that his daughter’s in-laws tortured her for dowry.

‘‘The victim’s father has alleged that his son-in-law wanted to migrate to the US and therefore expected him to pay Rs 4 lakh for the same,’’ Ghatlodia Police Inspector H B Pandya said.

Based on the FIR, the police have booked Hitesh and his parents under various provisions of the IPC, including that of the Dowry Act. ‘‘We have registered a complaint and have booked the accused. More facts will, however, come up in the investigation later,’’ Pandya added.
