Hemendra Shahi, father of jailed legislator Bhanu Pratap Shahi, was Tuesday evening inducted in Jharkhand's cabinet.
Hemendra Shahi was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Syed Sibte Razi.
The new minister, who is not a legislator, told reporters: 'If (P.V.) Narasimha Rao can become a prime minister then what is wrong in my becoming a minister?'
Asked whether he will seek election within six months as per the provision of the constitution, he said, 'Bhanu may become minister after he comes out of the jail.'
On two cabinet expansions earlier, Chief Minister Madhu Koda had pushed the name of Bhanu Pratap Shahi but the governor had taken objection as he was facing charges in 14 cases and arrest warrants in three cases.
Last week, after the tainted legislator surrendered before the Garwah court, he was granted bail in one case but his bail plea was rejected in two cases.
The opposition parties sharply reacted to the move. 'This is a mockery of democracy. We will launch an agitation against it and take the issue to people,' said former chief minister Arjun Munda.
