UGs arrested at Delhi airport brought back to Imphal

IMPHAL, Nov 12: Two high ranking members of the underground UNLF along with one KYKL sympathiser, who were arrested by the Delhi police on October 2 from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Dehli, while they were trying to board a Delhi-Kathmandu filght, were brought back to Imphal on an Indian Airlines flight this afternoon around 2.15 pm by a team of the Imphal West police led by SDPO Dr. AK. Jhalajit Singh.

The two top officials of the UNLF identified as Phanjoubam Ghanashyam Singh alias Romeo alias Priyo alias Michael alias Yamachou, 45, son of late Ph. Bhorot singh of wangkhei Konsham Leikai, holding the rank of Lt. Col. of UNLF and working as deputy secretary regional affairs of the outfit, Moirangthem Jayantakumar singh alias Millan alias James, 45, son of late M Ananda of Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, deputy finance secretary of the UNLF and Thounaojam Shyamsunder alias Sanayaima alias Shyamjai, 39, son of Th Binoykumar of Andro village, presently resident of Uripok Yambem Leikai, who was charged of being a sympathiser of the underground KYKL were detained in Delhi police custody till yesterday.

It may be mentioned that the Delhi Police on getting specific information from intelligence sources on October 2 apprehended the three from the Indira Gandhi International Airport and recovered pendrives from their possession which contained various incrimating documents of the underground UNLF and some hidden informations about the security base camps.

The police source further said that the Delhi police soon after their arrest identified two of them as officials of the UNLF, and in case of Thounaojam Shyamsunder a separate case was filed by them following the documents siezed from his possesion during the time of arrest.

The source also added that Shyamsunder applied for bail to the Additional Session Judge in Delhi on November 2 but his plea was rejected as the Delhi police had registered two cases related to terrorist activities and attempted linkage of the top officials of UNLF and KYKL in a meeting which was to be held in Kathmandu.

According to a police official of Imphal West district, an official intimation was made by the Delhi Police to the state home department for handing over of the arrested persons to the state police, and the state police in compliance of the intimation sent a team of police officials led by the SDPO Imphal West Dr. Ak. Jhalajit to Delhi recently where the trio were handed over to them today.

In the meantime, there were tight security arrangements made by the state police prior to the arrival of the trio from Delhi at Tulihal airport this afternoon. However, well wishers and local public of Andro gathered at the airport to give a warm reception to Shyamsunder at the Imphal airport.

The three were brought upto IPS this afternoon under tight security and detained in state police custody for further interrogation. However, the concerned police officials of Imphal West were tight lipped about the cases to be put up against the two top leaders of the UNLF and the sympathiser of KYKL.
