GULBARGA: Hundreds of dalits belonging to a number of organisations held a procession and rally on Friday in protest against killing of four dalits at Khairlanji in Bhandara district of Maharashtra. The event took an ugly turn when some miscreants started pelting stones at a few places on Sedam road.
A police jeep, a few autos and some two wheelers were damaged in stone pelting. People had to run helter-skelter for protection.
The procession was led by senior dalit leader Vitthal Doddamani and RPI leader Shivaram Mogha.
Later the agitators burnt the effigy of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil. They submitted a memorandum addressed to Maharashtra Governor to the deputy commissioner.
Condemning the killings, the dalit cadres demanded capital punishment for the culprits, adequate compensation to the families of the victims and suitable protection to them.
With dalit cadres resorting to rasta roko, traffic on the main road was disrupted.
