Sharad Joshi inaugurates farmers' blockade
KOZHIKODE: Sharad Joshi, MP, inaugurated a farmers' blockade here on Saturday.
The blockade, organised in front of the Collectorate was under the banner of the Farmers' Collective. Farmers' Collective comprises organisations such as FAMCO, Farmers' Relief Forum, Infam, Kisan Sena and Desiya Karshaka Raksha Vedi.
Mr. Joshi said farmers will be forced to move into an agitation mode if the authorities failed to stop revenue recovery and `evacuation steps' against farmers. He said both the Centre and the State Governments failed in arresting the growing number of suicides of farmers in the Malabar region.
A new farmers' movement of national character was taking shape, he said. The dharna in Kozhikode, the headquarters of the Malabar region, was the beginning of such a movement in Kerala, Mr. Joshi said.
A large number of farmers from States such as Punjab, Gujarat, Maharastra, Karnataka, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh and Kerala participated. K.A. Devassia, general convener of the Collective presided.
