2 killed and several injured when police open fired on mob that attacked police personals and tried to burn the Police station here in Mulky, 29km from Mangalore. They also attacked higher police officers in which Superintendent of Police B Dayananda and other police officers have been injured. The vehicle of Deputy Commissioner Maheshwar Rao also been damaged.
The violence broke out when a BJP leader Sukhananda Shetty was brutally murdered on Friday at 10.00 am at Kulai. He was the Panchayat member of Mulky and the General Secretary of Mulky Moodbidri BJP Committee. He was also a member of Bajrang Dal and Hindu Yuwa Sena.
According to the sources he was on his way to his office around 10.00 am at Kulai when about 5-6 unidentified men who came on a Tamil Nadu registered car attacked him with sabers and sickles. As a result, Sukhanand Shetty sustained serious injuries and was rushed to A J Hospital. However, he succumbed to the injuries and was declared brought dead. The doctors said death was caused to excessive bleeding.
When BJP leader Sukhanand Shetty’s body was taken from A J hospital from national highway, the police had not given permission to carry out a procession. It has come to light from sources that District Incharge minister Nagraj Shetty was leading the procession without the permission of district administration. During this time the mob went out of control.
and pelted stones at mosque, shops and houses. According to the sources a mosque has been badly damaged and many persons have been admitted to the hospital.
The furious mob then went on a veritable rampage and attacked the Mulki police station. Earlier, police had resorted to tear gas and lathi charge but had failed to control the mob. When the mob attacked the police station they tried to burn the station because of which the police were forced to resort to firing in which two people have been killed and four others were injured.
It has also been reported that during this attack on police station SP B Dayananda has also sustained injuries and some police personnel have been injured. The district administration has declared a 3 day curfew within the Mulki police station limits from Friday and the Section 144 has been extended to Mangalore city limits.
The two killed in firing has been identified as Premananda Chitrapu and Dinesh Chitrapu. One person is said to be serious. Police have arrested many persons. According to the police the situation is under control and heavy police force have been deployed to maintain the law and order.
