NEW DELHI: Asserting that disabled persons with creative talents were an asset for society, President A P J Abdul Kalam on Sunday said there was need to provide them an effective access to government services.
Distributing National Awards for Welfare of Persons with Disabilities to 59 people and institutions here, he said a proposal for employment of the mentally challenged in government establishments was under examination.
"Also, a Committee under the Chairmanship of the Director General of Health Services is working out methods to simplify the procedure for disability certification."
"I am sure this process will be completed fast and the reservation for employment of mentaly challenged persons in government establishments will come into force within the next three months," Kalam said.
The mentally and physically challenged with creative talents were an asset for society, he said. The Awards are presented every year on this day since 1969 to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons.
