Dr Asghar Ali Engineer gets award for human rights

Mumbai, Dec 03: Veteran scholar Dr Asghar Ali Engineer has been presented with the 'Muhammed Abdu Rahiman Sahib Foundation National Award' for his excellent services for the cause of interfaith harmony, human rights and adopting a courageous stand for reform and social change.

Muhammed Abdu Rahiman was a great freedom fighter and a Gandhian from Kerala in whose memory this annual award is given by a trust founded in his name at Kodungallur in Kerala.

The citation for the award says Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, a pioneer in the field of secularism and religious practice in India, has authored 40 books on the 'Theory and Practice of Islam', 'Problems of Muslim Women’s Rights', 'Communal and Ethnic Problems in India and Asia,' which testify his erudite scholarship, profundity of thoughts, clarity of ideas and precision of analysis.
