CHIKMAGALUR: Datta Jayanthi ended peacefully, but on a lacklustre note, at the cave shrine of Bababudangiri-Datta Peeta near here on Monday.
Devotees failed to turn up in expected numbers.
Bajrang Dal leaders put the blame for low devotee turnout on district administration.
State convener of Bajrang Dal Mahendra Kumar, talking to reporters, said, “Had the district administration not restricted movement, more devotees would have participated.”
Though Sangh Pariwar earlier claimed that more than 50,000 devotees would participate in the event, not more than 6,000 turned out at the venue.
Though the devotees started coming early in the morning, their number improved only after noon.
Visitors included Minister for Endowment Nagaraj Shetty, MLAs C T Ravi, M P Kumaraswamy, V Sunil Kumar, Chief Whip D N Jeevaraj, Bajrang Dal convener Mahendra Kumar, VHP state organising secretary Keshav Hegde and secretary Ramappa.
Virupakshananda Swamy, Jayabasavananda Swamy, Jnanaprabhu Deshikendra Swamy and Chandrashekhara Swamy who also visited the cave shrine expressed their dissatisfaction over disallowing them to offer puja.
Violence last week in Mulky might have also contributed for think attendance, they suspected.
