THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: Fast Track Court I, Judge, Y. Thajudeen Koya on Friday sentenced a 67-year-old woman to nine-years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs.15,000 after she was found guilty of harassing her daughter-in-law to death over dowry in October 2001.
The court also sentenced Murali, 37, the husband of the victim to the same period of rigorous imprisonment and fine in connection with the incident. In case of default of payment of the fine amount, the convicts have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for six months more.
The prosecution case was that Shanthamma and Murali, residents of Rishimangalam in Vanchiyoor, harassed the victim both mentally and physically over dowry, which eventually lead to her suicide. The police also recovered a suicide note from the body of the victim, which stated that the mother-in-law was responsible for her death. Public prosecutor Vattappara Sajan Prasad appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
