BHOPAL, NOVEMBER 30: A women sub-inspector was shot dead in her official quarters in the Bhind police lines area today. Chetna Sharma, who was attached to the district crime bureau, was found on her bed with a single wound in her chest. A bullet was found missing from her .9-mm service revolver.
The police initially claimed the 29-year-old had committed suicide. But after a preliminary investigation, an FSL team concluded that it did not look like suicide as the quilt Sharma had used to cover herself was intact.
Sharma’s parents alleged that she had complained of harassment from Bhind SP Rajababu Singh, who used to call her up often and once insisted that she accompany him on an official trip to Delhi. Sharma stayed alone in Bhind, where she was posted in May, while her parents live in Gwalior.
IG (Chambal) Vijay Yadav told The Indian Express that he had asked DIG DC Sagar to investigate the incident. “It appears to be a case of homicide,” he said, refusing to clarify whether Singh would continue as SP till the investigation was over.
Singh, however, denied the allegations saying he had no idea why Sharma’s parents were blaming him. He said she was facing a departmental inquiry for abuse of power and financial irregularities. A preliminary inquiry had also been recently initiated against her.
Singh said Sharma frequently visited Gwalior though he insisted that she should not leave Bhind. He said she was disturbed because she had to take care of her parents, her widowed sister and sister-in-law. Her advocate brother operates from Shivpuri, but does not help the family. Angered by Sharma’s death, her relatives blocked traffic demanding a high-level probe and immediate action against the guilty.
