SAHARANPUR (UP): Former Haryana MLA Relu Ram's daughter Sonia and her husband were arrested here on Friday and taken to Hissar, a day after the Supreme Court sentenced them to death for killing eight members of their family, including the legislator.
Sonia and her husband Sanjeev were arrested as their parole, which was to end on February 23, was cancelled after the apex court gave them the death sentence.
The duo was convicted for the murders of Priti (13 months), Shivani (two-and-half years), Lokesh (four years), Priyanka (14 years) and four elders of the family after a property dispute in Haryana's Hissar district.
Sonia claimed to be innocent and said she and Sanjeev were being made scapegoats as part of a political conspiracy.
"We are innocent. We could not produce any defence witnesses. Powerful people are behind this," she said.
"I have never confessed. There is no proof of my confession," she said.
Appealing for mercy, the couple said they had to look after their seven-year-old son, whose life would be destroyed. "I wish he was also hanged along with us," she said.
The couple was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police and handed over to their Haryana counterparts, who took them to Hissar.
