Coimbatore, March 5: The Tamil Nadu Temple Priests Welfare Association today accused the VHP-affiliated Village Temple Priests Federation of collecting funds from a large number of priests but not giving pension or other terminal benefits as promised.
Though the federation had collected Rs 1,500 each from 10,000 priests since 1996, no priest had ever received any benefit so far, association state president P Vasu Poojari alleged at a press conference here.
The association, having 48,000 priests as members, would request the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and take steps to get back the amount thus collected by the Chennai-based federation, Vasu said.
He also wanted the welfare board, to be constituted for Poojaris, to include only genuine priests and no politicians or others who were not linked to day-to-day temple works.
The association would hold conferences at all the district headquarters of the state by March-end, Vasu said. (Agencies)
