A DALIT was burnt alive on Tuesday after he allegedly killed a youth at village Samadpuri under Katangi police station in Balaghat. The police have booked seven persons, besides some unidentified persons, under Sections 147, 148, 149 and 302 of IPC and Sections 3 (2) (5) of Prevention of Atrocities on SC and ST Act for killing the Dalit, Chandrashekar Mahar.

According to the police, Mahar (30) was sitting at his brother’s pan shop when he had an altercation with Bhupendra Pawar (25).

In a fit of rage Mahar hit Bhupendra on his neck with a scissors. Bhupendra was injured severely and died. On learning about the incident, some people belonging to Bhupendra’s community, who had come to see a bullock cart race nearby, caught Mahar and thrashed him. They then put some hay on him and burnt him to death.

Balaghat DIG G Janardhan told Hindustan Times that the deceased were friends and had worked together as masons in Nagpur. They had returned to their village just before Holi. He said police have arrested six persons in connection with the burning of the Dalit.
