New Delhi The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice on the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday following reports of child patients being denied treatment due to a lack of medical staff at the institute .Calling it “a serious issue of violation of human rights of patients”, the Commission has now asked the AIIMS director to submit a report on the matter within two weeks.
The human rights panel brought to the attention of the AIIMS director reports that children in need of switch-arterial surgery were allegedly being made to wait after the doctor concerned was suspended and no alternate arrangement made.
“Due to the delay in surgery, the lives of these patients are reportedly in danger. While one child, Kanchan, was forcibly discharged, another patient, Prithavi, died allegedly due to a lack of proper post-surgery care,” the Commission said, quoting the reports.
Making the matter top priority, the Commission has also directed its director, general investigations, to contact the AIIMS director for taking appropriate measures on the matter.
