Bangalore: Political leaders worshipping Gods and Goddesses before filing their nomination papers to contest elections is common, but Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj and K Prabhakar Reddy, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore South and Bangalore Central respectively, offered prayers to animals including donkeys, buffalo, cow, Camel and horse.
Mr Vatal, explaining the rationale said, ”Only animals possess the qualities of honesty and truth.” ”They have no caste, creed and no religion. Hence, we sought their blessings.” No hymns were recited as the animals were made to stand in a line and garlanded.
Later, ‘Mangalarathi’ was performed and the leaders genuflected and sought the blessings of the animals.
These animals had been used by Mr Vatal for numerous agitations on different issues, including the Cauvery water dispute, border dispute with neighbouring Maharashtra and implementation of Kannada in administration.
”Since we used these animals during agitations we thought it was appropriate to worship them too,” they added.
Mr Vatal assured if he was elected to the Lok Sabha, he would strive for development of Karnataka and work for overall development of Bangalore city, apart from taking up the cause of animal welfare.
