Dimapur | April 17 : In a yet another most loathsome act of abomination, a six-year old girl – said to be hailing from Jalukie in Nagaland – was raped and then murdered at Mahipalpur, New Delhi today. Rape and murder has been confirmed, a north-east social organization has informed quoting police sources in Delhi. Quoting sources from the Vasant Kunj Police station, the North East Support Center & Helpline said a “suspect man” living in the same building where the girl was found, has been arrested while another, a Nepali boy is absconding.
The victim, 6 year old Gaipuilu Gangmei, was staying in Mahipalpur with her mother who is a staff nurse with the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre at Vasant Kunj while the father is a businessman. The family is said to be from Jalukie, in Nagaland.
Sources in Delhi said the victim’s mother received a call at about 2:30pm that her daughter was not at home. The body of the girl was found in an adjacent building at about 2:45 PM today inside an empty tank (a Syntex). The body was recovered naked, bruised and bleeding from the private parts of the unfortunate victim, it was informed. The victim was rushed to the Spinal Injury Centre in Vasant Kunj where she was declared dead-on-arrival while rape and murder was confirmed. An FIR has been lodged at Vasant Kunj police station. The postmortem is scheduled to be conducted April 18.
Sources said the mother suspects a neighbor to be behind the crime. The suspected motive could be from an altercation with a neighbor a few days back over water. The neighbor had allegedly warned her with a threat to causing harm, sources said.
The NGO, North East Support Centre & Helpline, also said to have rushed to the spot with a fact-finding team led by advocate Lansinglui Rongmei. The NGO quoted sources that the six year old had gone up to the roof to dry clothes at around 1:00 PM. When the girl did not return, the mother went up to the roof in search and did not find her. After about 45 minutes of searching, the victim was found in a water tank on the roof of another building.
The NGO contacted the Vasant Kunj police station and reported the matter. Sources from Vasant Kunj Police station confirmed that a “suspect man” living in the same building where the girl was found, has been arrested while another suspect, a Nepali boy, is absconding.
The organization has meanwhile urged the Delhi government to take appropriate measures to stop the discrimination meted out against people of the north eastern region. The NGO also cited recent incidents against NE people, where two girls in Gurgaon were assaulted by their landlord in December; in March, a boy was beaten up by cable operators while two girls were assaulted by a ‘Rikshaw driver’. Most of these cases are pending in the police stations, the North East Support Centre & Helpline said.
