Mumbai – Shockwaves surged through tinsel town on Monday after news spread that Bollywood star Shiney Ahuja (of Gangster, Life in a Metro and Woh Lamhe fame) has been arrested for raping an 18-year-old domestic help in his house. The actor was arrested by Oshiwara police on Monday morning after a medical examination of his domestic help confirmed sexual assault.
Additional Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta said the 18-year-old girl (name withheld) who was working as a domestic help in Ahuja’s house for the last one and half months had approached the Oshiwara police on Sunday night, accusing Ahuja of rape.
“She approached the Oshiwara police at around 7 pm and told the police that Ahuja had raped her. Initially the police could not believe that Ahuja could have done something like that. But after preliminary medical tests conducted on the girl in Nagpada police hospital late on Sunday night confirmed sexual assault, Ahuja was arrested,” Gupta said, adding that the actor was detained for questioning on Sunday night during which he “broke down into tears and confessed that he had raped the maid.”
Though police authorities remained tight-lipped about the incident, a source said the maid in her police complaint stated that on Sunday evening between 3-5 pm, when Ahuja’s wife Anupam, and two-year-old daughter were not at home, suddenly the actor grabbed her from behind, dragged her to his bedroom, gagged her and raped her.
“The complainant told the police that she was traumatized after the incident and went to her relatives’ place who along with the girl then approached the police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) Niket Kaushik, adding that Ahuja will be produced before a magistrate’s court in Andheri later today.
The actor has been booked under Section 376 of Indian penal Code (IPC) for rape, but later the charge of threatening to kill Sec 506 – was added, the police said.
If found guilty, Ahuja will face minimum seven years in prison.
Meanwhile, Ahuja’s arrest on rape charges has shocked Bollywood.
A Bollywood source said it was not surprising to hear that Ahuja could have done such an act, as the actor is known to be very temperamental both on and off the sets.
“Shiney is a very temperamental and impulsive person. Though he is a talented actor he has few friends, as he is very reclusive. In the past, he was involved in many controversies and I am not surprised to hear that he could have committed rape,” the source said, adding that the rape slur might mar his Bollywood career.
The grapevine is also abuzz with rumors that all is not well between Ahuja and his wife and Ahuja could have perhaps taken out his frustration on the maid.
Mahesh Bhatt, producer of Gangster movie, said it was unbelievable that Ahuja could have committed such an act. “This is a body blow to me. I spoke to a top police official who told me that he was informed by his juniors at Oshiwara that Shiny claimed that he had sex with the consent of the maid,” Bhatt said.
“However, she has claimed that she was forced into it. The police officer added that they had to accept the woman’s version. I had spoken to Shiny only yesterday. If he is found guilty of rape, we have to condemn him,” the producer said.
Arre Bhatt saab, be it rape or sex with consent, isn’t it sick that Ahuja, who is married, could do such a thing with a maid?
About Shiney Ahuja
Shiney Ahuja, 36, is the son of an army commander and modeled and featured in commercial advertisements before making a plunge in Bollywood.
Considered an outsider in Bollywood circle as he hails from Delhi, Ahuja made his acting debut with Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003), which was released in 2005.
The film won Ahuja rave reviews and was rated as one of the best movies that year.
After starring in Karam (2005), alongside John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra, Ahuja grew more familiar with mainstream audiences and went on to act in movies like Sins (2005) and Zindaagi Rocks (2006).
However, it was not until Mahesh Bhatt’s Gangster (2006) where Ahuja played the title role that he gained popularity and established himself as a mature actor.
Ahuja’s next release in 2006 was Woh Lamhe, which was both a critical as well as commercial success. Life in a Metro (2007), which starred the actor, fared well in the box office too. In 2008, Ahuja went on to bag the Kalakar award for ‘Best actor’ in Khoya Khoya Chand (2007).
The same year, commercially successful movies like Bhool Bhulaiya and Hijack in which Ahuja featured, helped him cement his place in Bollywood.
The actor, which currently has five films in hand – The Migration, Har Pal, Take Two, Chalo Movie and Accident – was recently in the news for shooting an intimate scene with Soha Ali Khan for their forthcoming film Accident.
