MUMBAI: A city school allegedly meted out corporal punishment, straight from the Middle Ages, to a 12-year-old Muslim girl for coming to school with mehndi on her hands. Tinha Kausar, a Class VII student at Little Angels High School, Sion, who had applied henna (mehndi) on the occasion of Eid, has accused the school of making her sit outside the principal’s office on the cold stone floor facing a toilet for over six hours, for breaking school rules that prohibit jewellery and Henna (mehndi).
She was made to undergo the ordeal the next day, too, until the education department intervened in the matter. While the school has denied the charges, the education department has slammed the school on the matter.
On Wednesday, Tinha was punished and the principal made her sit on the floor outside her office from 8.30 am to 3 pm.
“My daughter has a knee problem and was in great pain,’’ said Femida Shaikh, Tinha’s mother, adding that the girl had high fever on returning home, after sitting on a cold floor for so long.
Shaikh said her daughter went up to the classroom after the long recess at school, as she was tired of sitting on the floor all day. “But she was sent back by the teacher,’’ said Shaikh, adding that her daughter was made to sit on the floor after the assembly period the following day, too. “She was sitting on the floor from 8 am to 11.30 am. She was then sent back to class after the education department called the school over the matter,’’ said Shaikh.
