RTI activist Arun Sawant shot dead

MUMBAI: In yet another incident of an attack on an social activist, a Thane-based RTI activist Arun Sawant was on Friday shot at in Badlapur suburbs of this metropolis. He has been admitted to AIIMS Hospital at Dombivli and is reported to be in a critical state.
Sawant has filed several RTI applications in the past and the incident took place on Friday afternoon, when he had gone there to file an RTI application with the Badlapur Municipal Council. While of late he has become a social and RTI activist, earlier he has been associated with the trade unions.

This is the third incident of an attack on social activist this year in Maharashtra. In January this year, RTI activist from Pune, Satish Shetty was murdered. He had blown the whistle on a series of land scams in and around Talegaon, Lonavala and Pimpri-Chinchwad area. A Mumbai-based activist Nayana Kathpalia too was targetted, but she escaped unhurt. She has been fighting for open spaces in Mumbai.
