NCHRO Kerala Chapter Human Rights Day 2018 Observed with discussion on “Rights of One Human Are Rights of Every Human” – Key Note Address by Sugumaran Puducherry, NCHRO EXco Member

10-Dec-2018
NMR Hall, Palakkad

The NCHRO observed the International Human Rights Day on Monday 10 December 2018 at the NMR Hall, Palakkad, Kerala. This year NCHRO adopted the theme, ‘Rights of One Human Are Rights of Every Human’, embraces the idea that each individual, everywhere, at all times is entitled to the full range of Human Rights. This year’s commemoration of Human Rights Day is special because it marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption of one of the world’s most profound and far-reaching international instrument, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a milestone document in the history of human rights.

Welcoming speech was made by Vilayodi Shivankutty, President NCHRO Kerala State Chapter which was followed by a Keynote address by the NCHRO Exco Member, Sugumaran Puducherry. The other presentations of the day under the theme ”Rights of One Human Are Rights of Every Human” were delivered by different presenters such as Swami Vishwa Bhadrananda Shakthi Bodhi, KH Naser, Vice President Popular front of India-Kerala , K Marimuthu, KK Mani, TK Abdul Samad, AM Shanawas etc. KPO Rahmathulla delivered the closing remarks.

We are much to do to empower our political institutions, judicial systems, and economies that allow ordinary people to live with dignity. The success of a nation depends on the protection of basic rights of the citizens. Notwithstanding that the UDHR is more than half a century old, our country still has not been liberated from ongoing human rights abuses and violations. There is a prevalence of human rights abuses here: Leaders itself have pushed hate, Disobedience to court orders, spate of arrest of government critics, violation of right to life, ignored crimes against humanity, mob rule and lynch killings so on. The biggest disappointment is civil societies’ failure to hold the government to account, the gathering noted.

On this day, the NCHRO reaffirms its firm commitment to the multilateral human rights system to honour the fundamental fact that all human beings are born free and equal, and the notion that we all need to act in a spirit of respect and solidarity. The human rights violations, the undermining of democracy and the shrinking space for civil society, disregard and contempt for human rights all to lead to disastrous outcomes. Let’s make a difference together. we can work toward a more equal country in which everyone’s human rights are guaranteed and respected.
