Speaker’s Hall Constitution Club of India

26th November is the day when our constitution was finally adopted by the constuant assembly in 1949. Constitution of India in quintessence is a document of social change epitomizing our experience of National Freedom struggle. This supreme law lays down the frame work of our tryst with destination and also the trajectory for achieving the goals.

The constitutional idea of India is under serious challenge from the power that be and the non state actors. Parliamentory Democracy, democratic and constitutional rights are at stake. Independence and autonomy of the Constitutional and democratic institutions are facing severe crisis. Independence of Judiciary is threatend from within and without.

The Lawyers had played a leading role in freedom movement and in framing of the Constitution. Members of the constituent Assembly like Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru , Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Dr. Rajender Prasad, Alladi Krishna Swami Iyer, K M Munshi, Govind Ballabh Pant, Debi Prasad Khaitan, Sir Syed Muhammed Saadullah, N. Gopalaswamy Ayyangar, B.L. Mitter were all from the field of Law.

Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Chairman of the drafting committee who not only steered many debates to logical conclusions with his skillful handling but also handled amendments to the draft precepts by his rational argumentative accumen.

Lawyers played a yeoman role in bringing life to the letters. Expansion of horizon of Article 14, Article 19 in its various aspects. Article 21 of the Constitution in its sweep would not have been possible without contribution of the Lawyers. The present situation demands that the lawyers ones again rise to the occasion and take lead in protecting the Constitution and what it stands for a Sovereign Secular Socialist Democratic Republic.
