Following complaint from NCHRO, NHRC ordered report in custodial death case in UP

On March 26, 2021, in Ambedkar Nagar, UP, an inmate named Ziauddin had died in hospital after he sustained serious injuries in custody in the Akbarpur police station there. Evidence showed signs of torture and the family of the victim had also alleged the same.

The police had not taken any action regarding the matter, and had instead claimed that the victim had died due to heart attack despite there being many bruises and marks on the body of the victim. The National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations had subsequently filed a complaint in the National Human Rights Commission on March 30, 2021.

On May 16, 2021, the NHRC ordered the Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate to submit an Action Taken Report to the commission within the next six weeks. The submission of the complete medical record of the victim, the post mortem report, as well as the magisterial enquiry report have also been ordered by the commission.

The complaint was filed by the Vice President of the UP state committee of NCHRO, Zakir Ali Tyagi. We had urged the NHRC to take urgent cognisance of the case.

Sincerely,

Ishu Jaiswal,

Coordinator,

NCHRO
