NCHRO condemns the JNU administration for barring AICCTU Vice President Sucheta De from entering the campus: Calls it autocratic and an attempt to weaken the workers’ movement

“Instead of taking action against the grave violation of workers’ rights that has been happening since months, the University administration has decided to intimidate people who have been showing solidarity with the workers”: Adv. Ansar Indori

The Jawaharlal Nehru University has been seeing a continuous workers strike on campus. The sit-in protest is because the contractual workers have been working for months without any wages. Against this grave violation of workers’ rights in what constitutes effectively bonded labour, the workers started protesting.

On May 6, 2022, Sucheta De, a former JNUSU president and currently All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) National Vice President, has been declared out of bounds and barred from entering the campus by the Vice Chancellor for her “undesirable activities” after she participated in a strike by contractual workers.

This is clearly an attempt to weaken the workers’ movement on campus. Instead of taking action against the grave violation of workers’ rights that has been happening since months, the University administration has decided to intimidate people who have been showing solidarity with the workers.

Human rights organisation the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) strongly condemns the JNU administration for barring Sucheta De from entering the campus. Their hostility to workers and their attempt to weaken their protest for their rightful wages must not go unchallenged.

We urge every progressive organisation and individual to speak against this incident, and highlight the autocratic behavior of the JNU administration.

Sincerely,
Adv. Ansar Indori,
National Secretary,
NCHRO
