NCHRO condemns the killing of innocent civilians in the name of cracking down on rioters
New Delhi: 14 June 2022.
On June, 12, 2022, news came that two people were shot dead by the police in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The families of the two individuals have alleged that they were not even part of the protests against blasphemous comments about the Prophet.
The protests took place after Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, the loud-mouthed BJP leaders in Delhi made dirty remarks about the Prophet. Violence erupted in Kanpur and other areas in Jharkhand, UP and West Bengal when Hindutva goons attacked peaceful protesters. As seen in the past the saffron-clad UP government has been going after Muslims and bulldozing their houses, something unseen in a country which goes by the rule of law..
One of the two individuals who was shot dead was identified as Mohammed Mudassir Alam. He was the only son in his family. The other was Mohammed Sahil. Allegedly he was going to finish some work and was not part of the protest.
We can see very clearly that poor innocents are paying the price with their life while the ones that give hate-speeches and call for genocides roam around freely.
National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) condemns the killing of civilians in the name of cracking down on rioters. We demand an investigation into the killings. Following the investigation, the responsible officers should be held accountable and action should be taken against them.
The police do not have the right to shoot protesters either, as there are protocols for dealing with protestors. Sending bulldozers to destroy their homes is to be defined as a crime against humanity and appropriate action should be taken against the perpetrators with or without uniform.
We also urge other progressive organisations to speak against the killings and hold political leaders, police and racist goons accountable for their illegal acts.
