Upon complaint from NCHRO, NHRC registered case of Police abuse in Sonepat, Haryana

On June, 19, 2022, the police in the Sonepat district of Haryana barged into the house of one Parvesh Sherawat at the odd hour of 11 pm.

She wasn’t at home at the time, and the door was locked. The police unlocked the gate, searched her house, and then left. They came the next morning again in civilian clothes, when her children were at home but she wasn’t, and then phoned her and inquired her.

Later on, when Parvez Sherawat went to the police station, the police misbehaved with her, heckled her and used inappropriate remarks.

Against this incident, human rights organisation the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) filed a complaint in the National Human Rights Commission. The complaint was filed by Adv. Ansar Indori, the national secretary of the NCHRO.

The case of is a Dalit atrocity as it constitutes misbehavior with a Dalit woman when she was cooperating.

We have urged the NHRC to look into the case and intervene. Parvez Sherawat has been threatened by the police, and has claimed that her life is endangered. We have, hence, urged the NHRC to ensure her safety and take action against the police personnel.
